Artist: STEPHEN NDAVI

Medium: Painting

Stephen Ndavi’s images of eating children are painted on wooden chopping boards sourced from the markets of Mukuru – Nairobi’s second-largest informal settlement.  The used chopping boards from shops that sell vegetables, fruits or meat are painted with scenes of children eating and getting proper nutrition. As someone who has had to go without in his own childhood and youth, Ndavi regularly sources materials in the place he grew up and uses art to help his community. A percentage of every sale of his work goes to communities in the Mukuru slum.

Cyfrwng: Paentiad

Mae delweddau Stephen Ndavi o blant yn bwyta wedi eu paentio ar fyrddau torri pren o farchnadoedd Mukuru – ail anheddiad anffurfiol mwyaf Nairobi.  Mae’r byrddau torri ail-law hyn o siopau sy’n gwerthu llysiau, ffrwythau neu gig wedi eu paentio â golygfeydd o blant yn bwyta ac yn cael maeth digonol.  Fel rhywun sydd wedi gorfod mynd heb yn ystod ei blentyndod ac yn ei arddegau, mae Ndavi yn aml yn defnyddio deunyddiau o’r lle y cafodd ei fagu, ac mae’n defnyddio celf i helpu ei gymuned.  Rhoddir canran o bob gwerthiant o’i waith i gymunedau yn slym Mukuru.
